Child Support
“Child Support” can refer to a traditional monthly amount paid to a primary parent. It can also refer to matters like health insurance coverage, extracurricular activity payments, work-related daycare costs, or even payment for college.
Washington has a mandated child support schedule with an idea towards standardization in support amounts based on the income levels of the parents. While this sounds simple, there are often vast differences in the presentation of a party’s income for purposes of calculating support. Many families have unique situations, like self-employment or periods of unemployment. All are factors that must be communicated to the Court in a clear manner so support can be fairly ordered.
Washington does allow certain discretionary ways for a Court to “deviate” from the standard amount of support. Common factors are children from other relationships or a “credit” for the amount of time a child spends with the parent who has a duty to pay child support.
